Title
Towards a more effective legal aid in Belgium
Author
Abstract
This article will try to find out how legal aid systems in neighbouring countries of Belgium cope with legal aid problems of the citizens, how their systems are organized and funded by the governments. It seems that legal aid is not even comprehensive and generous in all compared countries. From the comparative analysis of the five countries it would appear that the more funding there is, the more systems can be defined as generous and comprehensive; in other words where there is a political will to provide the necessary budgets. The role of practicing lawyers cannot be denied and leads to a difficult exercise in balancing between budget restrictions and decent fees.
