This article reviews the available empirical evidence and ongoing research on official aid flows and the evolving international aid architecture, which is still an important subset of the global financial landscape for dozens of the poorest countries. It focuses on the recent evolutions of different types of aid flows (both absolute and relative to other external financing), and the principles and implementation of the New Aid Approach (NAA). Finally, it assesses the extent to which aid flows interact with the broader global financial architecture, and the role of aid flows in relation to the recent global financial and economic crisis. |
