Title
O sole mio : Italian charter-tourists' experiences of the midnight sun of North Cape, Norway
Author
Abstract
This article focuses on Italian charter tourists' experiences of North Cape, the site considered to be Europe's northemmosi spot and the most privileged place for gazing at the Midnight Sun. My aim is to show that tourists' experiences and interpretations of a specific attraction are culturally shaped and contextually situated. They are developed in relation to worldv'iew.s, practices and discourses that belong to the tourists' home-environments and are dependent upon the context in which the encounter takes place. Moreover. I will suggest that bv focussing on tourists' ways of exploring and interpreting an attraction, tourist experiences appear as dynamic and creative processes. Contrary to what is maintained in much work on touri.sm. tourists can be active interpreters eager to exploit all opportunities offered at a site {including "artificial" attractions) in order to find meanings for their experiences. I collected data by working as tour leader for an Italian charter company, (tourist experiences, tourists, places and spatial organization, simulation, representations of sites and sights]
