An open multiple measurement system for CO2 gas exchange has been developed for the determination of net photosynthesis and net carbon gain of a vegetation in a semi-controlled environment (plexi chambers in a PVC tunnel greenhouse) and this for varying CO2 conditions (350 and 650 ppm). Data for strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch. 'Primella' collected for a period of 23 days, clearly show that net C gain measured and computed using nondestructive CO2 analysis equaled the increase in C content determined by destruction of the test plants. The analysis of C gain based on CO2 exchange allows an estimation of biomass production and growth of a plant population under varying environmental conditions without physically handling the test plants. |
