Title
Long-range exchange measurements as a non destructive method for determining crop growth
Author
Abstract
An open multiple measurement system for CO2 gas exchange has been developed for the determination of net photosynthesis and net carbon gain of a vegetation in a semi-controlled environment (plexi chambers in a PVC tunnel greenhouse) and this for varying CO2 conditions (350 and 650 ppm). Data for strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duch. 'Primella' collected for a period of 23 days, clearly show that net C gain measured and computed using nondestructive CO2 analysis equaled the increase in C content determined by destruction of the test plants. The analysis of C gain based on CO2 exchange allows an estimation of biomass production and growth of a plant population under varying environmental conditions without physically handling the test plants.
