There is a growing research interest in academia in port economics, management and policy issues. This paper provides an analysis of all port studies published in Maritime Policy & Management (MPM) since its inception in 1973. It is demonstrated that MPM played and is still playing a key role in the maturing of research on seaport economics and management and more scientific approaches to the study of ports. The contribution of MPM to advances in port research is analyzed through an examination of 267 MPM papers categorized in seven inter-related research themes. More specifically, the paper provides for each category a content analysis including main research topics and methods, authorship distribution, the citation rate of the particular categories and the extent to which the research field has matured (or is maturing). The paper concludes with a discussion on current challenges for port-related research as well as an identification of emerging and promising research streams. |
