Abstract
An ethnobotanic survey has been made in the surroundings of the Kahuzi Biega National Park (KBNP) in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Our aims were to document the use of Pteridophytes by the neighbouring population of KBNP Mountains, and to link our data with conservation issues. Our inventories show that 41 Pteridophytes species are subject of several uses: 34 species are medicinal and treat 36 different illnesses, seven species are edible and nine species are used for various activities. The survey also showed that the knowledge concerning uses of ferns and fern-allies is detained mostly by the Pygmies. The assessment of risk of extinction of species, the conservation status and some recommendations to establish strategies for conservation in the surroundings of the PNKB are also given.
