Abstract

This paperinvestigatesthepossibilityofattenuation-basedsecuritywithinchemicalindustrialareas. Representingchemicalindustrialareasasmathematicalnetworks,weprovebycase-studythatthe resilience todisasterofsuchareasmayfollowapower-lawdistribution.Furthermore,weexaminewhat happens tothenetworkwhenhighlyhazardousinstallationswouldbeintelligentlyprotectedagainst malicious acts:thenetworkdisintegratesintoseparatesmallernetworks.Hence,islandsareformedwith no escalationdangerinbetween.Weconcludethatitispossibletoprotectchemicalindustrialareasin such awaythattheyaremoreresilientagainstterrorism. |
