Title
Low cost automated setup for fringe projection profilometry
Author
Abstract
Fringe pattern profilometry (FPP) has become one of the most used non-contact techniques to reconstruct three-dimensional object surfaces. This technique has several applications in different areas as for example: biomedical, such as 3D intra-oral dental measurements, human body shape measurement, inspection of wounds, skin topography; industrial and science applications such as vibration analysis, surface deformation, among others. A fully automated setup for FPP was presented, which only uses low cost components (such as a webcam, an Arduino board and a printer rail that makes it possible to replicate this setup by following easy steps and build it to be portable. The user does not need to have special knowledge or background on the technique because of the simple user interface. Data acquisition and monitoring could be also done remotely and also exported to other software for manipulation. Important parameters such as the period of the fringe pattern, its phase shift amount, the positions and translation of the camera and some camera settings can be modified in the Lab VIEW front panel or in the block diagram. Due to the characteristics of the setup, it can also be applied to other optical measurement techniques by making simple changes.
