In many ways, film has contributed to the ways people perceive human sexuality and gender. The increased attention the medium received since the sexual revolution, is therefore no surprise. With the eruption of the gay liberation movement in the early to mid 1970s, the burgeoning field of queer film studies has emerged, to which many activists have contributed. Yet, the way these liberationist groups have incorporated film into their activism, has received limited scholarly attention. Particularly for the 1970s and 1980s, although crucial decades in the development of gay emancipation, film practices are largely unexplored and undocumented. This study surveys and analyses film screenings and festivals in the Flemish gay and lesbian movement during the 1970s and 1980s. The attempt here is to not only go 'behind the screens' and see how these screenings were organised, but also to probe deeper into the (political) intentions and programming strategies that shaped these events. I will argue that, over the course of the 1970s and 1980s, there has been a noticeable transition in the objectives and preferences of both organisers and audiences. By the mid 1980s, the aim for confrontation and provocation had evolved in an aim for identification. 'Arthouse' movies that were saturated with homo-erotic images, were increasingly replaced with films that provided a less experimental, yet more relatable narrative. These developments were part of a re-thinking of activism in the gay emancipation movement, where sensitising society gradually became a priority over critiquing society. |
