The new wave of huge data sources, also referred to as big data, entails new forms of information and content for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Open data is the latest appeal in the open data philosophy and trends. In this article, we explore the affordances of (linked) open data for education in general and for CALL in particular. Learning analytics, adaptive learning environments, and open educational resources are the obvious beneficiaries, but contextualization of the learning process appears to be a relatively unexplored affordance. And this while available literature already touts its merits. |
