In the area of Milan, encompassing the city and 34 surrounding municipalities, air quality standards for CO and NO2 in urban districts and for O-3 in surroundings are frequently exceeded, mainly as a consequence of traffic emissions joined with high frequencies of calm winds and stable atmospheric conditions. Following a brief outline on traffic related issues included in the air quality control plan enforced by regional authorities, present work reports on the assessment of source control required for standards compliance: the evaluation is performed through empirical statistical models, derived from the large data set available from monitoring stations in the area, properly combined with a roll-back approach. |
