During his long career as a writer and activist, Georges Eekhoud (18541927) dedicated himself to adopting and defending several aesthetic and political positions. As a writer, he penned both regionalist literature and scandalouswritings. As an activist, he defended nationalist positions, which he exchangedin 1916 for a left-wing internationalist commitment. What are the consequences of reading the literary work of Eekhoud, in particular the texts he published after 1916? In this contribution, I will tackle this question by means of aclose reading of Dernières Kermesses (1920). The book is presented as a bookwith a “regionalist” mark (the book is the last part of the Kermesses trilogy)whereas it was published when the author already had embraced (political andliterary) “internationalism”. |
