Title
Effects of ageing on pavement air voids during mixture transportation from plant to field
Author
Abstract
Asphalt binder ageing that takes place during the asphalt mixture transportation may affect air voids in the compacted mixture. This paper evaluated ageing during mixture transportation from the asphalt plant to the field and the effects it had on pavement air voids. The aggregate grading system used during this study conformed to the Malaysian Jabatan Kerja Raya gradation for mixture type AC14, while the binder type was a conventional penetration grade 80/100 (PG 64) asphalt binder. To evaluate binder ageing effects on pavement air voids, mixtures were produced in an asphalt plant, artificially aged in an oven for 2 and 4 hours, and tested using the Saturated Surface-Dry and Corelok methods. An extended analysis was also carried out to convert calculated air voids obtained from the Corelok to Saturated Surface-Dry methods and vice versa. The results showed that density and air voids were directly related. In addition, it was discovered that the ageing duration resulted in a slight increase in mixture air voids.
