DespiteBeckett’sclaimofhavinga“beein[his]bonnet”about“mixingmedia,”intermediality and transmedial adaptation were important sources of innovation for his writing,especiallyfromthe1950sonwards.ThepresentarticleanalysesPlay(1964)asa goodexampleofthisdynamicbydemonstrating(1)howitsgenesiswasinfluencedby Beckett’sexperiencewithradio,and(2)howitsowntransmedialhistoryprovesthat rather than rejecting “mixing media” in principle, Beckett’s ostensible insistence on “keepingourgenresdistinct”turnsouttobeanappealtofullyexploitthemediumspecificpropertiesofradio,theatre,filmandtelevision. |
