This paper investigates the implications of some socialanarchists’ views on education for thinking about authority, educational paternalism and compulsory schooling. In the first part of the paper, some key concepts in socialanarchist theory will be introduced in order to demonstrate theimportance of education for social anarchists. The paper thendiscusses anarchist educational ideas with regard to thecontent and process of education. Potential justifications ofauthority and educational paternalism receive specialattention. The final part of the paper revolves around adiscussion of compulsory schooling understood as apaternalist practice. It aims to contribute to ongoing debatesby evaluating the educational institution of the school, and thepractice of compulsory schooling, from a social anarchistperspective. The pragmatic character of this approach isreflected by some final remarks on the feasibility anddesirability of compulsory schooling in imagined anarchistsocieties and our existing societies. This paper is aimed at anarchist and non-anarchistphilosophers of education. Anarchist theory criticallyscrutinizes all authority and hierarchy and takes no existingsocial structure, institution or practice in any area of life forgranted. An engagement with anarchist thinking oneducational issues such as authority, directiveness, educational paternalism and compulsory schooling may helpanarchists and non-anarchists alike to enrich and deepen theirown views on certain practices. |
