The rise in global sea-levels and extreme events brings forth direct challenges on international freight infrastructure. This is particularly important considering the significance of sea-borne trade for international commerce and key logistics and trade centers located near coastal areas. In order to adapt to the changes and disruptions, it is imperative to, first, enable a global framework to assess climate-change and extreme-events risks in maritime activities. Second, design adaptive enforcement mechanisms which set a minimal standard for pollutant-reducing and sustainable infrastructure development in seaborne activities. Finally, ensure that future infrastructure investments contribute to mitigating climate change and extreme events (such as pandemics) by enhancing stakeholder engagement in developing resilient international freight infrastructure through institutional collaborations. |
