In this doctoral thesis, the underlying factors of frailty and sarcopenia will be investigated. Also, practicalities in diagnostical approach will be reviewed critically. Very soon in this process, frailty does not seem to be a practical concept in clinical practice. Therefore, the focus is put on sarcopenia. In depth, the physiological changes that occur during ageing of muscle tissue are reviewed. This leads to insights that teach us the importance of myology as a specialty. Nutrition, as one of the most important risk factors for sarcopenia, and its link with mortality is investigated in different populations. As the last part of this work, an emphasis is placed on how to make a diagnosis of sarcopenia. This however, doesn’t seem to be that simple. The downsides and problems of computed tomography and bio-impedance analysis as diagnostical tools are reviewed. To end, a practical solution for the barriers in diagnosis is offered, in the form of ultrasonography. This technique will be presented in a standardized, practical way. |
