Digital Twins are an important innovation that will power the next generation of smart devices in many different contexts. Currently, scientific literature does not agree on what exactly constitutes a Digital Twin. Rather than adding another definition to an already long list, we analyze the current literature on Digital Twins, and attempt to relate the many different definitions of Digital Twins to each other, identifying not only the similarities, but also differences in what different companies and researchers view as a Digital Twin. We also discuss some of the key technologies that enable the creation of Digital Twins (DTs). Using the insights from these sections, we propose a new line of research and development, focusing on areas that are not currently represented in DT literature. Finally, we discuss the merits as well as flaws of our classification of DTs. |
