Title
Il Parlamento europeo: dagli Stati ai Popoli?
Author
Abstract
The European Parliament's ambitions to represent a "European People" and the political-institutional development that led to the increasing of the EP's powers clash with the reluctance of the Member States to cede sovereignty. This leads to a series of questions: what direction is taking the European Union? Will the integration process eventually be completed in a federal sense? Will the democratic deficit finally be overcome? The chapter offers an historical-political overview of the origins, the powers, and the main criticisms of the European Parliament, in order to better grasp the complexity of these questions.
