Title
Johannes Mahusius' preek op het Onze Vader als gedragsregel voor de cisterciënzerinnen van Ter Kameren
Author
Abstract
In the 1560s the Franciscan friar minor Jan Mahieu alias Johannes Mahusius (c. 1503–1577) preached on a number of occasions in the Cistercian abbey of Ter Kameren in Elsene near Brussels. The nuns of this abbey wrote down his sermons on the Twelve Articles of the Christian Faith (1560/61), on the hymn Veni creator spiritus (1562), and on the Pater noster (1563) in long cycles. The twenty-seventh and last sermon of the Pater noster-cycle, that is addressed to Sister Barbara (Barbe) Tasse (1529–1598), the remarkable abbess of the abbey, and the other members of the community, can be considered as a rule of conduct. It addresses the different groups of inhabitants in ten sections – each of them connected to a verse from the Pater noster – and gives clear indications of the ‘conditions’ each of them should have, on a very practical level. This article provides an edition of this notable sermon. It is preceded by a biography of both Johannes Mahusius and Barbara Tasse, and a description of the transmission of the sermon as well as its contents.
