An environmentally and socially broken global food system: what role for competition law?

Abstract

| Competition law, as we discuss in this paper, is gaining ground as a possible tool to address some of the issues that we have just mentioned: however, the focus on improving and adapting existing tools must go hand-in-hand with a reconsideration of the role of market-based mechanisms and the principles of competitiveness when it comes to adequately feeding people and regenerating the planet. The Farm to Fork Strategy (F2F), a vision for the future of the EU food system, represents a clear example of this renewed interest in the construction of the food market and – to a certain extent – competition law. Besides, other debates are unfolding that try to adapt and use competition law to achieve higher levels of (mainly environmental) sustainability in the food system and that need to be assessed in their logic, implementation and consequences. |
