Maritime transport is a powerful and diversified industry with international dimensions. International maritime trade is inextricably linked to maritime transport. The developments of each of them impact on the other. It is a continuous interaction in which an economic sustainable response to key trends such as industrialisation and urbanization in emerging economies, changing demographics, disruptive technologies, sustainability and climate-related disruptions, and trade and geopolitical tensions must be formulated. The international environment in which maritime transport operates has changed significantly in recent years and makes it subject to a high degree of uncertainty. To understand this industry, the aim of this chapter is to introduce commonly used maritime shipping terminology and discuss the market structure and setting that determines shipping companies’ behaviour. |
