Title
Going negative by metaphors : the Donbass conflict in the Russian and the Ukrainian press
Author
Abstract
This article examines the media coverage and conflict construction by way of metaphor at the event of international tensions. It investigates metaphor as a conceptual and discursive framing device that markedly contributes to the distinct representation of the Eastern Ukrainian military (Donbass) conflict in the Russian and Ukrainian press. We use in this study Cognitive Metaphor Theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), and Critical Metaphor Analysis (Charteris-Black, 2004) and Metaphor Power Taxonomy (De Landtsheer 2015; Beer & De Landtsheer, 2004) as discursive methods. We conclude that Russian and Ukrainian media outlets used metaphors for their enemy construction and conflict mobilization, and in particular the stronger hostile imagery which refers to the body, illness, and violence, with “Colony” (Russian media) and “Fear” (Ukrainian media) as major source domains.
