Abstract

| Children are often the most vulnerable in armed conflict and displacement. This is because armed conflict and displacement affects all aspects of children lives. Although numerous humanitarian activities are targeted at mitigating negative consequences on conflict affected children, yet evidence regarding factors that are essential for mitigating negative consequences of the armed conflict are scant. Most previous studies focus on the assessment of the negative effect of armed conflict on children, and consequently provide little evidence base for targeted policies and intervention towards the care of conflict affected children. This research explores the relationship among ecological microsystem factors, humanitarian intervention activities and the wellbeing of armed conflict affected children in Nigeria using the Lippman domains of child wellbeing. A mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) approach was used to elicit data from 385 children and eleven Adults from six communities in Borno and Adamawa state of North east Nigeria. Result indicates the importance of relationship within the microsystem level of the child with emphasis on positive parent -child relationship as important to conflict affected children wellbeing in North east Nigeria. Aside, the relationship variables (with teachers, peer and parents) within the children microsystem level of the child with parents, peer and teachers, ease of meeting basic needs, livelihood support intervention and education support were also significant to the children wellbeing. This study therefore recommends that intervention and policies targeted at conflict affected children should work on supporting the children microsystem relationship variable within the school and the home. |
