With ‘Mater certa, pater semper incertus’, the Romans already had their own version of the more contemporary ‘Mommy's baby, daddy's maybe’. These expressions refer to the ever-present uncertainty surrounding the biological bond between father and child. When a man incorrectly assumes to be the genetic father of his child, a so-called misattributed paternity (MAP) event occurs. A MAP event can either be detected when a formal genetic paternity test is performed by cause of doubt or judicial order or as an ‘incidental finding’ in clinical genetics or direct-to-consumer ancestry DNA testing. However, paternity is not only a biological phenomenon but also a social, cultural and legal fact. Therefore, the detection of a MAP can have a substantial impact on the lives of those involved. |
