Title
Mommy's baby, daddy's maybe : misattributed paternity in a nationwide blood group database
Author
Abstract
With ‘Mater certa, pater semper incertus’, the Romans already had their own version of the more contemporary ‘Mommy's baby, daddy's maybe’. These expressions refer to the ever-present uncertainty surrounding the biological bond between father and child. When a man incorrectly assumes to be the genetic father of his child, a so-called misattributed paternity (MAP) event occurs. A MAP event can either be detected when a formal genetic paternity test is performed by cause of doubt or judicial order or as an ‘incidental finding’ in clinical genetics or direct-to-consumer ancestry DNA testing. However, paternity is not only a biological phenomenon but also a social, cultural and legal fact. Therefore, the detection of a MAP can have a substantial impact on the lives of those involved.
