| From 1663, the Portuguese-Jewish scholar Isaac Abendana worked in Cambridge on a Latin translation of the entire Mishnah, completing it by the beginning of 1676. Abendana’s translation was never printed and the manuscript he delivered remains in Cambridge University Library to this day. This paper revisits the context of Abendana’s translation by looking at several interlocking issues: Abendana’s life as teacher of Rabbinics in Leiden, Cambridge and Oxford; his connections to the various Christian circles invested in producing a Latin Mishnah; the possible reasons for which his Latin commentary was discontinued after the first Order; and the possible reasons for which it was never printed. In light of the discovery of several additional (if partial) copies in his own hand in Oxford and London and in the hand of a student in Wittenberg, it is clear that manuscript copies circulated and knowledge of his work reached across Europe. |
