Reconstrucción de los espacios públicos de exhibición cinematográfica de la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba (1906-1986)

Abstract
After the disappearance of most of the movie theaters that proliferated for eighty years, Santiago de Cuba today presents initiatives for the reuse and resignification of its former "leisure palaces", which are essentially based on their cultural functionality. Very little is known on the local cinema history of the second largest city in Cuba, as most academic research has focused on the capital Havana. Therefore, the arrival and institutionalization of cinema in this specific urban context is not valued of historical transcendence, and neither are its implications on the level of culture and on the very evolution of social communication media. The objective of this research is to reconstruct the public spaces of cinematographic exhibition in the city of Santiago de Cuba between 1906 and 1986, for its historical and cultural resignification. The study uses qualitative and quantitative methodologies from the integrated New Cinema History (NCH) approach. This consisted of comparative analysis, oral history, documentary analysis of personal and institutional archives, and programming analysis, facilitated by self-generated longitudinal databases on cinemas and film screenings in Santiago. A longitudinal analysis shows how public cinema exhibition spaces influenced the cultural development of the city. The determination of key moments in the cinema history in the local context allowed for the generation of a multidimensional typology of public exhibition spaces, based on their location in specific zones, the image and architecture of the cinemas, their underlying exhibition structures and their film programming. The changes in political and cultural context, with the Cuban revolution as major shift, equally impact on the local cinema exhibition culture and industry. We conclude with the valorization of the results through a cartography or mapping in the website CineMAP Santiago (cinemamapsantiago.com). This PhD is the first study carried out on in Cuba as part of the international network Cultura de la Pantalla, and at the same time, delivers an original contribution to socio-historical studies of communication in the Cuban context. The academic results furthermore inspire educational and cultural goals, in diverse social and cultural heritage fields.
