In the heart of central Asia lies the saga of handwoven silk and cotton in Uzbekistan. The textile sector of the nation is of great socio-economic importance since the Soviet era. The nation has exported silk and cotton across Central Asia and Russia for a long period. However, in this process of commercialization handloom lost its charm and market space. This article aims to revive the handloom sector back to the national and international fashion and textile trade. This research revolves around silk and cotton handloom production in the main regions of the country. The research is planned around the factories in the regions to figure out challenges and opportunities for the sector. To begin with, observational research will be held in the regions to see the presence and current status of the manufacturers. Secondary data was analyzed and qualitative interviews were conducted to analyze problems from the factory owner/ artisans. Lastly, solutions were provided in light of empirical evidence. This research significantly adds to the current literature as there is scarce data and researches in this sector. The handloom sector needs urgent attention as it is going through tough times. This article shall serve as a wake-up call for the stakeholders to initiate innovation and progress for a sustainable future. It shall also serve as an example for other regions in Uzbekistan and around Central Asia. |
