Abstract

There is no such thing as ‘Belgian theatre’. The Belgian theatre landscape is a highly complex motley quilt characterized by a wide variety of aesthetics and dramaturgical traditions. This chapter explains how the recent history of theatre in Belgium cannot be separated from the gradual political and institutional autonomization of the Flemish and the francophone communities. Theatre developed along different lines in both parts of the country, most notably (but not exclusively) because text and dramaturgy play a different role. This chapter also insists on the importance of Brussels within the complex Belgian landscape, its urban reality of superdiversity triggering new intercultural dramaturgies. |
