The Art and History Museum, located in the Cinquantenaire park in Brussels, was conceived and built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century with a clear focus on the exhibition rooms. The storage spaces were located under the ground level, in the cellars. Over time, donations and acquisitions accumulated to form a museum collection of some 200.000 objects (titles) stored in the museum building, of which some 16.000 are exhibited. Preparing a new masterplan for the renovation of the museum by 2030, the museum’s management and architects wondered how to approach the issue from a new angle: what if all the objects and their storage space, the repository, were the starting point of the museum concept? |
