Title
The storage at the core of the museum
Author
Abstract
The Art and History Museum, located in the Cinquantenaire park in Brussels, was conceived and built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century with a clear focus on the exhibition rooms. The storage spaces were located under the ground level, in the cellars. Over time, donations and acquisitions accumulated to form a museum collection of some 200.000 objects (titles) stored in the museum building, of which some 16.000 are exhibited. Preparing a new masterplan for the renovation of the museum by 2030, the museum’s management and architects wondered how to approach the issue from a new angle: what if all the objects and their storage space, the repository, were the starting point of the museum concept?
