Abstract

It was in the Southern Netherlands and especially in Antwerp that Protestantism developed first and most vigorously. That the end of the Revolt in the Netherlands eventually halted this development and made Antwerp a bastion of the Counter-Reformation could not have been predicted. At the same time, it is precisely the religious and cultural reconversion of that Counter-Reformation that caused the memory of that Protestant past to be erased, both mentally and in the streetscape. |
