This chapter addresses intervention studies that use writing process measures as input or outcome measures. Currently, most interventions have a product-oriented approach, as the instruction is directed at the writing product and the interventions’ effects are evaluated by assessing the texts. Though still rather underexplored, more process-focused intervention studies are gaining attention. In this chapter, I give an overview of previous interventions that include process measures, and I make an argument for a more process-oriented approach. Why is it important to design interventions that use writing process measures as input for feedback and instruction? And what can we learn from evaluating the intervention by looking at its effects on the writing process? This chapter also includes recommendations for setting up interventions using process measures as input for the intervention, in addition, practical guidelines for the use of keystroke logging are provided. A case study illustrates how data collected with keystroke logging software can be used as input and outcome measures in a writing process intervention. |
