This chapter examines from a decolonial perspective the rewritings of Spanish chronicles of the presence of the Chinese pirate Limahong in the Philippines by nineteenth- and twentieth-century Filipino writers. In these rewritings, the authors subtly shift the perspective on the pirate and question the history as handed down to them by the Spanish colonial power. In this way, the texts on Limahong reflect the social tensions of the late 19th century (around the Philippine revolution) and the 1960s, when the country was under the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. In addition, an unpublished text is recovered, perhaps the last Filipino novel in Spanish from the classic period: "La aventura de Limahong" by Antonio Abad (1963). |
