Until recently, the interior decoration of the Upper Sodality of the Antwerp Jesuit convent was based on archival sources and eyewitness reports of uncertain reliability. The discovery of new iconographic sources allows us to create a detailed reconstruction. In this article, we focus on the decoration of the western wall, including seven paintings dedicated to an honorary title of the Virgin Mary, derived from the Litany of Loreto. The paintings were inserted into elaborately sculptured marble frames. Most of the artwork was created by members of the Sodality of Unmarried Men, while other members made financial contributions to pay for the works. |
