Title
Overtourism and sustainability: a timely intervention by the United Nations
Author
Abstract
Tourism, one of the largest global industries, impacts host countries economically, socially, politically, and environmentally. Overtourism, defined as the excessive negative impact of tourism, poses a growing challenge. The UN, through the UNWTO, adopted the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (SF-MST) in 2024 to assess tourism's impacts comprehensively. This framework enables data-driven decision-making to manage and mitigate overtourism. By measuring sustainability across various levels, SF-MST supports sustainable tourism development, helping destinations preserve their cultural and natural assets for future generations.
