Title
First report of fishing in the European Blackbird **Turdus merula**
Author
Abstract
During two hours of observation, a female Blackbird made approximately 30 attempts to catch fish, 20 of which were successful. The bird watched and followed a minnow shoal in shallow parts of the river, hopping from stone to stone in a way that resembled its normal behaviour when catching earthworms. The bird only caught small individuals (57 cm). Larger individuals were present in the river but were not seen within the shoal and were not attacked.
