The antiepileptic drug valproic acid shows good therapeutic efficacy when plasma concentrations range between 50 and 100 ìg/ml. Because higher concentrations may induce toxicity, monitoring of valproic acid plasma concentrations is a frequently performed assay in the routine clinical laboratory. The authors compared their routine fluorescence polarisation immunoassay on the Cobas Integra 400 with a competitive immunoassay, a cloned enzyme donor immunoassay, both on the Vitros Fusion 5.1 chemistry system, and a gas chromatographic procedure with mass detection of the trimethylsilyl derivative of valproic acid. |
