This paper discusses the relationship between Not I, a play written in 1972 by Samuel Beckett, and Jacoba van Veldes Dutch translation of that text. The methodological choices apparent from her translation will be compared to the method that Beckett adopted for his auto-translation of Not I into French. This is possible thanks to the three successive versions of Pas moi that have been preserved. On the basis of this genetic translation method it becomes possible to formulate the priorities that governed Becketts translation, which other translators can use as a guideline. Finally, it will be suggested that it is perhaps time for a new Dutch translation of Not I, one that respects the authors priorities and uses Jacoba van Veldes Niet ik as a basis. Her work will thus achieve the same status as Becketts first version of Pas moi, without which the published version could not have existed. |
