World maritime cities: from which cities do container shipping companies make decisions?

Abstract

In recentdecades,manyresearchershavedevotedthemselvestothestudyofworldcities.Oneofthe mostimportantcontributionstoworldcityresearchhascomefromthe GlobalisationandWorldCities StudyGroup&Network(GaWC-LoughboroughUniversity).GaWCfocusesonexternalrelationships between worldcities.Ithasanalysedtheworldcitynetworkandthehierarchybetweencitiesinvarious sectors, butprimarilyinadvancedproducerservices(accountancy,advertising,banking/financeand law).PreviousstudieshaveidentifiedLondon,NewYork,ParisandTokyoashigh-levelglobalservice centres, followedcloselybyChicago,Frankfurt,HongKong,LosAngeles,MilanandSingapore.Thusfar, however,themaritimesectorhasbeenneglectedintheidentificationandanalysisofglobalcities.The main purposeofthepresentarticleistofillthisvoid. The firstpartofouranalysisincludesastudyoftheliteratureonworldcitiesandanexaminationof the criteriaandmethodsonwhichpreviousresearchhasbeenbased.InpartII,weexploretheworld maritimecitynetworkbyapplyingandinterpretingtheGaWCmethods.Foracitytoberecognisedasa world maritimecity,itmusthaveapresenceofcontainershippingcompaniesandcontainerterminal operators.Asforthecitysoperationalcapacity,thatisdeterminedbytheextentoflinkagesbetween those containershippingcompaniesandcontainerterminaloperators,ontheonehand,andtherestof the worldmaritimemarket,ontheotherhand.ThecollectedempiricalevidenceshowsthatHongKong, Hamburg,Singapore,Shanghai,Tokyo,NewJersey/NewYork,Bangkok/LaemChabangandLondonare the worldsleadingmaritimecities.Furthermore,analysisofinterrelationsinthesecitiesbetween shippingcompaniesandcontainerterminalhasindicatedHongKong,HamburgandNewYorktobethe main nodesintheworldmaritimecitynetwork |
