Representation as claims-making : quid responsiveness?

Abstract

| Representation is recently viewed in terms of claims-making. However, in emphasising the performative aspects of representation the issue of responsiveness risks being overlooked. Juxtaposing Hanna Pitkin's seminal work on representation to Michael Saward's article 'The representative claim', this article argues the need for a reintroduction of a notion of responsiveness within the claims-making framework, and offers a dynamic conceptualisation of responsiveness based upon a typology of congruence established between elected and non-elected claims. |
