In an era where almost every actor - from policy makers to senior managers - is thinking about the environment and sustainability, new innovative concepts are developed worldwide. A large set of new concepts and efficient process designs exist. One of the methods, seen in the biggest US cities, is the transport of freight by bike. Bike couriers prove to be fast and reliable within congested urban areas. Although sustainability was a selling point, speed was of more importance. The research question is whether these companies can be an economic viable alternative for fossil fuel powered transport, and if so, in what markets these opportunities are found. Encountered weaknesses and opportunities are integrated. First, the market structure will be discussed. Research was made from a Belgian perspective. Secondly, a link is made towards other logistics companies. Emerging trends will be looked at. Hereafter, a cost comparison is included. The cost per stop is compared. |
