Scaling-up carbon fluxes from leaves to stands in a patchy coniferous/deciduous forest

Abstract
The likely impact of global climate change (i.e, elevated CO2 and temperature) on a forest ecosystem is being assessed using a scaling-up modelling approach. The forest is being characterised by measurements of biomass, leaf-area index, leaf gas-exchange, soil respiration and branch and stem respiration. Gross photosynthesis of each patch is modelled using the Sun/Shade big-leaf approach for the over-storey and under-storey layers separately. Biometric relations and frequency distributions of tree size are used to scale respiration to the stand level. Whole forest CO2 flux is calculated from the fluxes of each patch by weighting with a factor derived from footprint analysis of eddy covariance measurements, which are used to test the scaling up approach.
