Patrick Dendale & Julie Van Bogaert, Reflections on the definitional criteria and the problems with identifying evidential markers in French In this article, we discuss the possible problems one encounters when adhering to Anderson's (1986) four defining criteria for evidentials. The discussion takes an article by Boye & Harder (2009) and previous analyses of French evidential markers as its starting point. We first consider the conceptual criterion of "source of information", holding it up against larger conceptualizations, that encompass epistemic modality, as well as taking evidential subcategories into account. Next, source of information is examined in the light of the problem of polysemy and pragmatically derived evidential meanings. Thirdly, we look into the issue of primary predications as opposed to specifications of main predications and finally, into the grammatical versus lexical status of evidentials. By way of conclusion, we argue for definitional criteria that are relative to the type of study one seeks to conduct. |
