The Excellente cronike van Vlaenderen (Excellent chronicle of Flanders) describes the history of Flanders from the first forester named Liederic de Buc (621 AD) until the end of the fifteenth (or early sixteenth) century. It describes in detail the history of Flanders under Burgundian rule and everyday life in Bruges. The chronicle came down to us in a printed edition of 1531 and in seven fifteenth century manuscripts. All sources name Anthonis de Roovere as the author of at least one part of the chronicle. It seems likely that De Roovere is responsible for the years 1437 to 1482, as is stated in the printed edition as well as in several manuscripts. There may be a relation between the annuity De Roovere received from the city of Bruges since 1467 and the writing of this chronicle.. |
